So, my first trip during the EVS project started in 2 days right after my arrival :) I went to Velikie Luki, Russia, with the staff of Ulei and children/youth, who're studying there, going to different groups, dancing singing and theater... This was my very first trip to Russia (I only was at St. Petersburg for about 5-6 hours after my plane's arrival, and while waiting for the bus, I was just walking there in this winter/cold time). During this trip I opened for myself a happy tradition, about what I'm going to tell a little bit to you today and there will be some photos from the trip too, so you could see what I have seen there ;)
Since long ago there is a tradition in Russia (and in Baltic states russians are celebrating it too) to say “goodbye” to winter and “hello” to spring. The holiday of seeing off of the winter is called Maslenitsa. It's a favourite holiday in the country. It lasts from Monday till Sunday. It comes either at the end of February or at the beginning of March, this is so-called movable festival. This holiday means the end of winter and the spring coming. It has pagan origin. During this holiday people visit each other, children play snowballs, light bonfires, enjoy horse-sledging. The concert is held in the city on this matter, the artists sing age-old songs, chastushkas and organize practical jokes. People take part in different competitions, ride horses and drink hot tea with pancakes not to be frozen. The pancakes are the main attribute of this festival because a pancake is a symbol of the sun.
The festival always ends in burning of a big man of straw.
The Lenten fast begins after Maslenitsa for orthodox believers. During these days people should avoid eating any kind of meat, but they are to eat much butter, cheese, sour cream, lots of pancakes. I consider that this festival brings people together and let them enjoy themselves and meet the spring together.
This are a couple of photos from the group, I was traveling with...
Teacher students and not only :)
Snowman dressed up people (idk from which city) :)
So, then we did the games...
Everybody, who were winning were getting some cookies and sweets as a present :)
Too much photos for one post, but I do have a couple more, from Latvia.
We went to Daugavpils (it heard for me like Dolgopups from the Harry Potter, the guy named Nevil ;)). We stayed there for a night, at the sport complex's campus, and next morning we went to Rezekne for the Maslenitsa.
Here is it...

At first the concert...
A big dancing pancake of course :)
And finally we went back to the games, sweets and cookies :)
After all of this of course walking in the city, shoping, food, drinks, singing, playing guitar and having interesting conversations, taking a rest, getting ready to go back to Estonia :)
Was interesting and funny, if you're used to cold, recommend you to try one year go somewhere in Russia or Baltics (cities and towns, where the most are living Russians) and spent with them your holidays while there is Maslenitsa ^^ or just dress up very well and warm, then go ahead have some Russian cold fun ;)))...
